De Italiaanse Clara schrijft op Facebook aan Board&Dice:
Dear Board and Dice, I write as someone who does not play many board games. My husband, who is a huge fun, drove my attention to this issue, asking for my opinion as a native speaker. I am concerned not about your statement - I would take it as a given that you are against discrimination, this is a duty, no discriminatory behaviour should be condone- but what concerns me is the poor evidence you have that this was a case of discrimination - that you have poor evidence is clear also from the fact that the translation you have relied on, of Mr Tascini's post does not make sense in English. I have never met, or I assume never even played any of Tascini's games, but I went into the trouble to read his statement in the original language. The statement has offended many people, many belonging to vulnerable and often marginalized groups. It is unacceptable that this was the consequence of bad framing and translation. I would get your translators (context matters in translation by the way) up to certain standards. You risk to be liable for defamation here. Even worse, you will have led many believe - wrongly - that Tascini has attacked a particular category of people. This way, you would be responsible for perpetrating the hurt that some might have felt - needlessly, given that this is a classic example bad (maybe even interested?) reporting - and you will also be responsible for ruining the career of someone whose job is to design table games. In addition, by taking up this position, you would also need to be consistent and make sure that none of your board games can be ever criticized for any content which might (or might not) be interpreted in different ways. Happy to elaborate more on this. To summarize, your position seems misinformed and what is more hurtful for me as a person (not as a client), as someone who sympathises with all who hurt here (marginalized group and someone who might have been unjustly accused) is that your position perpetrates divisions and pain, rather than helping mutual understanding, potentially forgiveness and rather than indicating a way forward.
Later geeft ze een vertaling; haar moedertaal is Italiaans:
'Have ogress always been represented as being 'black' (reference here is to the colour)?? + (questioning emoticon). This (it is unclear what 'this' refers to, because whoever took the photo did not take a photo of what was earlier in this threat/conversation) proves the bad faith or short sightedness of all those who support these sort of arguments (again, here we don't know which arguments he is referring to, we have no previous context photoed). In the fantasy world you have a distinction between light and darkness. (according to this distinction) what is evil ('male' is the word in Italian for evil) is often portrayed as dark. But how can one draw an analogy between this representation (referring to the stereotypical representation of evil in the fantasy world) and the skin colour of people from Africa?? Also, talking about black skin makes no sense as people's skin have different colours. Skins can be light dark, tanned like us Italians are, dark brown, etc. I will never call people of colour 'black', because their skin is not black. I have many friends originally from Africa. I will never refer to their gender/skin type (here, given that 'gender' can be translated in Italian in several ways, without any previous context it is impossible to understand whether he referred to the skin type or to the gender) because they are NOT black, why should I ever make a distinction (between people) on the basis of their gender or race? If I refer to them as 'nigger', while we are among us (in amicizia) they do not take it as an offence because the meaning of words changes with the context.
